The hornbill is a fascinating bird whose nesting ritual is unique - after mating, the female seals herself into a tree hollow using dung and pellets of mud gathered for her by the male. The female leaves an opening only big enough for the male to pass food and materials through, and for six to eight weeks she relies on the male to feed her and their chicks through that hole. Only after she has molted and her chicks have developed feathers will she come out of her chamber.
This display of dedication between mates (which sometimes results in the male exhausting himself to the point that he doesn’t survive the experience) is just one of the many interesting facts about this eye-catching bird.
